Interview: Carly Gibson's Upcoming Release 'Love Me', Will Have You Begging For More

We're wrapping up our #Womencrush feature on Carly Gibson with an exclusive interview. Carly's release of her upcoming single 'Love Me', will instantly be begging you for more. Carly spills about the inspiration behind the single, being a female in the industry, and finding her passion.

Thank you for chatting with Music Update Central! You're gearing up for the release of your new single 'Love Me'. What's the inspiration behind the single? Thank you for having me! This song is inspired by my love and partner in crime; the ultimate gratitude to have found my person, while cynically acknowledging the struggles and true irony of the fact that before we met, we both had separately felt we were destined to be alone. This relationship, my first serious one, has been going for almost 7 years. I am forever amazed by the power of unconditional love. This is my first “happy” love song i’ve written believe it or not.

When did you know that you wanted to pursue a musical career? In some way, I knew from when I was just a tiny kiddo, when I would watch Wayne’s World on repeat with my big brother haha. Seeing a badass woman like Tia Carrere sing and play rock n’ roll was such an inspiration to me, as well as the movie’s sound track itself. Hearing Jimi Hendrix and Queen for the first time was a religious experience. I knew that looked like THE most fun. Also, my whole family are musicians. My mom and dad played in several groups growing up. Music was always the pinnacle in our house and often times the way of getting to connect and heal with them, and myself, on a deeper and more meaningful level. I decided after I started my first band at 13 that I wanted nothing more than to pursue music as a full time profession. Nothing sparked as much joy and nothing made me feel more myself; still til this day. I’m so grateful for it and the people it has brought into my life.

What advice would you give to other females looking to pursue a musical career? First off, you have to throw gender roles out the window completely. I believe in this as a whole. It seems obvious, but easier said than done since these societal roles have been disgustingly imprinted in our culture for centuries. If you want to play with the big boys and girls you have to step up and push yourself past the social and cultural expectations. You have to have a thick skin yet still have an open heart. The music business is still a male dominated world. You have to know deep in your heart that you can do ANYTHING those guys can do and more; you ALWAYS have a voice. Be true to yourself. Be unique and unapologetic about it. Be respectful and humble to yourself and those around you. Slay with kindness. Never compare yourself to anyone but YOURSELF and the last gig you just played. At the end of the day, it’s about the music, not your instagram selfies. Be real. Be genuine. Through the blood, sweat, and tears, practice your freaking ass off.

What can fans expect in the upcoming months? Leading up to my 4/20 single release, I will be mostly writing and also working in the studio wrapping up my other two projects; Gibson Wilbanks will be releasing our debut record in August, and The Pussywillows will be releasing our debut EP in October. We’ve all been working our fingers to the bone and we are beyond excited and ready to share our songs and our hearts with you. My single is just the beginning of what’s to come for all of these projects. I will also be doing various social media takeovers and interviews sharing this debut single.”
