Talking Holiday Traditions and The Voice with Country Artist, Adam Wakefield

What pushed you to try out for The Voice? I tried out probably four times I think. I tried out three times in New York when I was living in Baltimore. What was cool about my season was there were a lot of people that were primary musicians already. The year that I actually got an audition and got to be on the show was the year I was not looking to audition for it. I was playing with my band at Soulshine and a producer asked me to audition. Since I had already auditioned a bunch of times, I wasn’t holding my breath. I told him if i’m not out on the road and in town i’ll go and it all randomly worked out. Next thing you know i’m on the show.

You had Blake and Adam turn around for you in your blind audition. Did you have an idea of who you wanted to go with or was it an impulsive decision? I did, I always thought i’d go with Blake because i’m in Nashville trying to do the country music thing. They were both good though. I think the producers wanted me to pick Adam, or at least Adam really wanted me on his team, because he said all the stuff that I wanted to hear. It was tough, I almost went with him. Then he got to talking about Nashville and trashing on it a little bit and he lost my vote.

Do you feel like, no matter what happens, The Voice has positively impacted your career? For sure, it has been great. I made a lot of really great friends and got a great fan base out of it. I have been making a living the past year and a half from it, so it has been great. The cool thing was that I was already in Nashville playing a couple of years before. I had already made some relationships, so that helped open a bunch of doors I may not have been able to get otherwise.

You’ve received some great praise about “Blame It On Me” from tons of music outlets. That must have felt pretty special? Yes! It has been getting a lot of really good reception. I think we found lighting in the bottle with that one. It came together from so many different people and places. It was journey and I think it came together pretty good.

What can fans expect from you in 2018? I have been recording a whole bunch of music and playing with the Steeldrivers. I am going to put out new music for sure, but still figuring it out.

Let’s talk a couple of minutes about Christmas, do you have a family tradition you love to do each Christmas? I am a big decorator. Last time I moved I had one box with all of my stuff and one box with Christmas decorations. My decoration box is way bigger than my stuff box. I wait all year until the day after Thanksgiving to listen to Christmas music. But as far as traditions go, we always had Winnie the Pooh pajamas when I was a kid. I had this red pair and my brother had a green pair. His had Eeyore and mine had Winnie.

Do you have a favorite Christmas Movie? Christmas Vacation and Elf

What about a favorite Christmas album? Vince Guaraldi from the movie “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” that’s the one album I don’t skip a song on my playlist.

What’s been your favorite album/song of 2017? “Weight of These Wings” by Miranda Lambert is such a good, honest record.

Do you cook as much as you can when off the road or do you prefer eating out? I get so sick of eating out, I just like staying home off of the road. I will be honest I make a lot of it is spagetti. I have been trying to make the best pot of spaghetti ever. I am up to green onions, red onions, green peppers, way too much garlic, but I am getting there. I am like two or three batches away.

What food is your food vice? You know, one you sneak in a little extra of when no one is looking. The midnight postmates of a Mcdonald’s sundae. There is just something about a McDonald’s sundae. I always try and eat dinner early, but if I eat to early by 9 or 10 o’clock I am hungry and Mcdonalds is right next to me. It’s like $6 to have Mcdonald’s delivered.

Now that you have been in Nashville awhile, if you designed your own food tour, which restaurants/bars would be on your list of places to visit? First and foremost would be Soulshine pizza because they have great pizza and music, after that there is a great spot right next to my apartment that just opened called Mockingbird. The food is great and the milkshakes are amazing. I am also all about sushi so I go to Nama a lot and if I can afford it, Virago. Last Hattie B’s for Hot Chicken, but the line is usually ridiculous.

After playing a late show, what is your guilty pleasure food? A lot of times it’s whatever open. I remember when I was out on tour with Chris Cagle and we would drive miles out of the way for Taco Bell, so it’s not Taco Bell cause i’m over that. Late night is usually pizza. Though when we leave a venue we usually clean out all of the leftovers.

Favorite cereal growing up? Well there is my favorite cereal my mom would let me get, and there’s my favorite cereal she would never let me get. Fruity Pebbles was the one I always wanted, Cinnamon Toast Crunch was the one she would let me get. Now that I am older I appreciate the better cereals and Cinnamon Toast Crunch is probably one of my favorites.
