Interview: Nashville Artist, Spencer Jordan Releases Debut Single "Maroon Five"

Singer/Songwriter, Spencer Jordan from Jupiter, Florida. After graduating from the University of Florida in 2016, he began his songwriting and artist career in Nashville, Tennessee. Spencer's music is a mixture of the music he listened to growing up in his small beach town and the prevailing sounds found in today's pop, and his writing focuses on the everyday struggles and victories that come with life, love, and growing up.

Spencer Jordan shares the inspiration behind his debut single "Maroon Five", upcoming releases, and finding his passion for music.

What's the inspiration behind your new release Maroon Five?  It's kind of a cool story actually. I was having an hours long text conversation with my now-boyfriend using only Maroon Five song titles, and it somehow made complete sense. I got to thinking about how many songs Maroon 5 has put out over the course of my life and how many of them take me back to very specific moments in my life. I hear "I Can't Lie" and think of driving home from high school my junior year on US-1. I hear "Harder to Breathe" and I'm in the back of a master-craft on a lake in Tennessee watching my best friends wakeboard. That all being said, I woke up the next day essentially singing the melody of what became the chorus and had the words "I can still hear the Maroon Five playing" in my head. Luckily, that day I had a write scheduled with Missy Gardner (MISY), and it was the first warm day since FOREVER, so we drove to the park by her house and wrote the song in a few hours. I like to say its inspired by my boyfriend, but very much about a few different relationship that have been over for a long time. 

What made you want to pursue a musical career? I've been playing guitar since I was 12, the age that every parent make their kid either play an instrument or a sport. I was an incurably awkward kidI had no coordination (this hasn't changed), so it was classical guitar lessons for me. I learned I could sing around the age of 15 around youth group campfires, and wrote my first song at 16. It was always a hobby, but my junior year of college I started writing again and ended up starting a band. We played all over UF and Gainesville, and I started focusing more on music than pre-law. By the end of college I'd fallen in love with writing and performing, and my 2 degrees became just two very expensive drink coasters. I moved to Nashville immediately after graduating and have been pursuing an artist and songwriting career ever since.

Where do you draw your inspiration from? Growing up and relationships mostly. A lot of stuff from my childhood too. I'm obsessed with pop culture and an absolute superhero fanboy (I just wrote a song called "Kryptonite"). I just turned 25, the day I released Maroon Five actually, but most of the time I just feel like a big kid. I didn't really experience a lot of life until 21, so over the last 4 years I kinda got punched in the face by all the awesomeness and crappiness that is being human. I try to reflect that in my songs. Writing, especially when I'm just writing for myself, is how I make sense of all the extremes of life. 

Who are your biggest influences? I feel like I kinda have to say "Maroon 5", don't I? Haha. Growing up it was a lot of John Mayer (of course), Jack Johnson, and Jason Mraz. I'm still inspired by my OG's, but lately I've been really feeling the stuff Lauv, Troye Sivan, LANY, and Charlie Puth have been putting out. My entire life is pretty much an attempt to reconcile the stuff that I was basically raised on and the stuff that is affecting me right now.

What can fans expect in the upcoming months? This is my favorite question, because right now I'm in the process of answering it for myself as much as for fans. I will definitely be putting out at least 2 more singles between now and September, and am playing with a few EP concepts for after that. The idea of an album is terrifying, but definitely the singles are happening for sure. I just put everyone in their feels, so I guess I've gotta put out a bop next!
