Interview with Erin Coburn about her new single "MiSFIT"

Music Update Central: What is the inspiration behind this song?

Erin Coburn: I was inspired to write The MiSFIT because all my life I’ve never felt like I’ve fit in. I’ve always felt like I was on the outside, especially when I was in high school. Then I left high school sophomore year to go to an online high school for gifted and talented students. I felt like I fit in a little more then because I wasn’t around a lot of people. After a little while, I started to use social media a LOT more and it made me feel like the ultimate misfit. I realized I wasn’t following trends and so I tried to follow them... it didn’t feel like me. I wrote this song because I wanted a reminder to myself and to people like me that being a misfit is cool! Misfits CREATE their OWN trends. They can be their own best friends. That is what this song is about.

MUC: What inspired the cover art?

Coburn: At the same time I was writing this song, I was into comic books. I got the idea to do a comic book like cover for my single and I really wanted to get all of the band dad’s involved. I got my bass player’s dad, my drummer’s dad, my dad, and my boyfriend to help put it together!

MUC: What do you hope listeners will take away from this single?

Coburn: I hope listeners get a feeling of freedom to be whoever they want to be whether they “fit in” or not.

MUC: What inspired the specific spelling of the single title?

Coburn: I’m glad you asked this! I chose to title it “The MiSFIT” because I wanted one letter to not fit in with the rest... so “i” was the one to stand out.
