Country Singer Drew Haley Release Six-Track EP 'Don't Mess With Mama'
Americana singer-songwriter Drew Haley released her long awaited EP titled ‘Don’t Mess With Mama’ on September 29th. In the weeks leading to this EP she released the title track “Don’t Mess With Mama” as a single along with the accompanying music video. Listeners can find this EP on their favorite streaming platform now and watch the music video here!
This writing for this EP was fueled by Drews years of songwriting while living in Music City as well as her personal progression through the phases of life. “I wrote some of the tracks after an ugly divorce, and some while falling in love with my current husband,” she says. Recorded at RCA Studios, distributed by Heart Songs Music Group, and produced by David Spencer, Don’t Mess with Mama showcases Haley’s knack for narrative songwriting with a country twist, in the vein of acts like Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town.
The title track shows us the sassy side of Drew that she doesn’t often let shine through. She jumps head first into the song as she sings a powerful “Tell them I’m crazy” leaving no room for speculation on what's to come. The music is played with thoughtful intention as the chords ringing out from the piano are plucked in abrupt and sharp notes. Creating a feeling of mischievousness, plotting and scheming drawing the audience in as Drew tells her story. The pressure builds as the music ramps up leading to the climax as Drew belts out “Try me if you wanna.” With a sudden drop to silence, Drew warns “But don’t mess with mama.” Just as in all of her songs, Drew is authentic and bold following in the footsteps of the trailblazing women in this genre like Miranda Lambert.
The accompanying video keeps the good vibes going as it shows scenes of a fun summer day with the kids. The video starts with Drew standing in a field with a cut-off shirt that reads “Tough as a mother.” The scenes flips from this tough mama swinging on her kids swingset with a glittery wine tumbler to her fellow moms and kiddos jumping in the pool. There are cute parallels throughout, one side being Drew reaching for her wine while the other side being her song reaching out for his bottle. The video ends with Drew looking right into the camera as she gives her last warning, “Try me if you wanna / but don’t mess with mama.”
