Interview with America's Funnest Band, Coast Modern
Coast Modern dropped their self-titled debut last fall and it's a rollercoaster ride through a musical spectrum that spans from introspective acoustic streams of consciousness to psychedelic jams to relaxed dancehall vibes. They've racked up over 30 million streams and are currently out on their "Haunted House Party" tour. We chatted with the guys about all the fun they are having on the road and their upcoming Nashville show at 3rd and Lindsley.
We are really excited about your Haunted House Party tour coming to 3rd & Lindsley on April 1. What can fans expect from the show?
It’s just a super loose and wild environment, different than a normal show. Beyond the talent show and fan-provided lights, we’re trying out a bunch of new tunes and jamming some live stuff based on audience feedback. The goal is fun.
It is sure to be an exciting night with your talent show, can you tell us a little about what fans can bring?
Fans can literally bring anything that lights up. The first night someone brought an old 70s grandma lamp painted with our logo. There’s also been a 5-foot inflatable snowman, giant gummy bears, you name it.
What has been the best performance you have seen so far?
The one that stands out was a girl who could do hyper-realistic baby crying noises. There was a worm-off dance competition too.
You dropped your self-titled debut last fall, and have been receiving rave reviews from tastemakers. That must feel pretty special?
It’s cool! We just made something that felt fun and true to us so, it’s awesome to know other people are on that same wave.
Is there anyone you that you would love the opportunity to perform with?
Oooh… Kanye? Empress Of. Paul McCartney. MGMT.
What’s the best advice to give to a musician just starting out?
Make a lot of really bad songs! Just get out a lot of ideas and don’t be too precious with them. More will come and they’ll be better.
Favorite thing to do on a day off?
Get a nice 2pm brunch, some 3rd-wave java, hit a record store, and just chill, maybe make some beats at the Airbnb.
What’s the rest of 2018 look like for you?
Exploring more caverns of the mind and smushing them into song.
