Interview: Canadian Award-Winning Artist, Brett Kissel

Award-Winning Canadian artist, Brett Kissel releases album 'We Were that Song' and hits the road on a upcoming tour. Kissel chats about the inspiration behind album, pre-show rituals, and pursuing a musical career.

Thank you for chatting with Music Update Central! You just released your album 'We Were that Song'. What's the inspiration/message behind the album? I’m awfully proud of how this album turned out because I wanted it to be diverse, wild, crazy, and chaotic, the way my life actually is! This album has everything for every country fan. I didn’t want to think “inside the box” on this one, I wanted to DESTROY THE BOX on what was possible for a country album!

What's the inspiration behind your single 'We Were That Song'? If the song couldn’t fit in my set list I didn’t want it on the album. And from the minute we stepped foot into the studio, I felt that ‘We Were That Song’ had this special energy and vibe to it. Musically it’s a lively song, but lyrically is says so much about experiencing love and a relationship with someone you love. It was the perfect blend of everything I like about country music!

What made you want to pursue a musical career? Interestingly enough: there was never anything else I wanted. Some people had dreams later in life about pursuing music, but ever since I was a little kid, all I ever wanted was this. So I’m very lucky to have been playing guitar since I was 6, and to have been performing on stage since I was 7 or 8! Music is my life - and I hope it always will be!

MUC Random Question: What's your favorite pre-show ritual? The band and I get into a circle, we talk about show, and we talk about the importance of the show, the people that have paid to come and see us play, and importance of this moment. We reflect, we give thanks, and then we put our hands in the middle and yell “3-2-1 IT’S ____________ BABY! WOOO!” What we usually yell out is the city name or the event name we are playing at. Oh, and while we gear up and get changed for the show we also vote on who’s funky socks are the best “that day” - as we all wear wild and crazy socks!
