Interview: Katie MAC Has a Message for the 'Nice Guys'
This rising female powerhouse, Katie MAC is showcasing her songwriting abilities and vocals with her debut release of 'Nice Guys'. The female artist chats about the inspiration behind 'Nice Guys', summer memories, and influences.
Thank you for chatting with Music Update Central! You just released your debut single 'Nice Guys'. What's the inspiration behind the single?
No, thank YOU! “Nice Guys” came from some personal experiences I've had in numerous relationships, but it was mainly inspired by one particular, “Nice Guy”, who I found out had a total double life after a few years of dating. (Hence the, “Then they go all Jekyll and Hyde” line). The song started with the title, which I brought to my co writer and producer, and we went from there!
You bio stated that you draw inspiration from influences like Taylor Swift. How has her music impacted your career? Well, I actually started writing songs as a preteen as a result of Taylor's influence. I was totally obsessed with the idea of becoming a songwriter at a young age and I always emulated her. I asked my parents for my first guitar thinking that I would grow up and write country songs just like she did. Obviously, my style evolved a lot as I got older, but I have always looked up to Taylor as a great lyricist and badass woman.
What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself? Be comfortable doing what you do best, and don't compare yourself to others. I think I spent a lot of time when I first moved to Nashville feeling like I didn't measure up to people who were better than me at certain things. Now, I find myself feeling totally comfortable bringing what I do best (lyric and melody) to the writing room, and thrive off of collaborating with people who are talented in different ways than I am.
MUC Random: What's your favorite summer memory? From the time I was five, I've spent summers at my grandparents' home, which is a part of a dude ranch in Granby, Colorado. What a lot of people don't know about me is that I actually used to be really into riding horses and I still love it, along with pretty much anything outdoors. I don't get to go back as much as I would like, but that place was always my happy place during my summers!
