Meet Our Hero, Kendall Lake

Kendall Lake talks about the inspiration her recent single "Hero" ft J. Rae, Trueblood experience, and tacos/tequila.

Thank you so much for chatting with Music Update Central! Tell us about your recent released single "Hero". Thank you so much for having me! I'm really excited to talk you ya'll about "Hero" as it's one of my personal favorite songs I've recorded so far. Mainly because it's the first song I've released about me having a conflict of feelings and thoughts about love and friendship and independence and vulnerability. I think, especially in this day and age, people don't trust their feelings.

You wanna love and appreciate someone but you don't want to be taken advantage of but then you can see this person cares about you and you both kinda lean on each other. But you don't want to admit it, then you get defensive because you feel like you might be getting taken advantage of or unappreciated. In the end you understand you need help and love and someone to be there for you. I don't even know if that makes sense.

It hard to contextualize my feelings and views sometimes but "Hero" is about giving (and getting) help and support. Those are two things we all need.

You teamed up with J.Rae on the track "Hero". What was it like working with her? It was amazing!!! She's one of my favorite independent artists and to get to work with her was not only flattering but brought my project to a new level. That's the beauty of what I do. I'm so inspired by people and artists and the way they think and their skills and just the way they attack their dreams and life. I've actually worked with a good about of people and every time they got my song, they changed the tone and did things that I didn't expect but at the same time excited me. It's also kinda good for me to have someone I respect on my track to kind of take the attention away from me hahaha it's scary being all alone, sharing your music, hoping people like it. At least when in have a dope artist on my song I have a great person to hide behind.

I'm a HUGE fan of HBO's True Blood, which you appeared on. How does your acting play a role in your music? TrueBlood was such an amazing experience, I'm so lucky to have been a part of it. When I'm writing or performing I have to really lose myself in the song and the emotion I'm expressing. That's what acting is all about, isn't it? Plus it's fun to play a different part of yourself.

Write a song about any famous actor, who would it be and why? Oh my god lol I don't even know where to start. I love so many actors and there is no way I could write a song about any of them. I feel like I wouldn't do them justice. I'd much rather write a song about tacos or tequila lol
