Create Your Own Self Identity

“This is what so and so is doing.” “I want to be like this person.” I see so many artists get caught up in what other people are doing, they forget who they are. They feel like since this person is doing that, they think that’s what they need to do. What I’m going to tell you is that not everything works for every single artist. It might work for one, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to work for you.

You have to create your own self identity, your brand, your image. What someone else is doing and created has already been done. You need to find out as an artist, who you are and what your brand is about. Once you figure that out, there’s so many things you can create and work with to market yourself the way that will connect with the music you’re making. If you’re doing something that someone else is doing, it might not make sense with your brand and “image” you portray with your music and fans. They hear one thing and see another. It just won’t match up. You need the whole package to come together for it to work.

As an example, when I think of an artist like Taylor Swift, I immediately think of red lips and curly hair. She has obviously evolved with her look. Another one that comes to mind is Eric Church. When you think of Eric Church, the first thing that comes to mind is the sunglasses, leather jacket, and American flag scarf. Ultimate badass! And pop sensation, Ariana Grande with the high ponytail. These are things that come to mind when you think of a specific artist. It’s what you as an artist have to figure out what your “thing” is.

Thank you for reading this weeks blog post. Stay tuned for more!
