MNEK is the host of a very special dinner party in the official video for his new single, “Tongue”(Capitol Records). The clip, which was directed by Bradley&Pablo (Charli XCX, Frank Ocean, Migos, Cardi B) and premiered on Noisey, can be viewed HERE.
“Bradley&Pablo hit me up on Instagram around the time I was finishing my album. I was already a huge fan of their work, so it really was amazing to get to collaborate with them for the ‘Tongue’ video,” says MNEK. “It’s set at a dinner party and alternates between reality and fantasy to capture the unspoken tension between me and this guy. I wanted to challenge black masculinity in a fun and sassy way. I’m dancing in the video, which I’m excited about. I also got to have my friends in it, like Becky Hill, A*M*E and K Stewart, for the dinner party. It’s my favorite video, and I had the best time shooting it!’”
Sounding like Bobby Brown’s creative peak reinterpreted through the technicolor glow and wit of RuPaul’s “Drag Race,” “Tongue” is the mark of MNEK planting his own flag firmly in the sand as an important artist to watch. Since premiering last week on the BBC’s Radio 1 as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record, the single has racked up nearly one million streams on Spotify and charted in both the U.S. and Global Viral 50.
NYLON said, “MNEK’s sexy new track will have you licking your lips and ready to attack that special someone in your life.” Idolator noted, “MNEK’s Sexy, Romantic “Tongue” Sounds Like A Hit.” “‘Tongue’ is a highly-sexed electronic banger about something really quite sweet, falling in love and being too nervous to say it out loud,” observed THE FADER.
Capitol Records will release MNEK’s solo debut album later this year. The U.K. artist signed his first publishing deal at age 14. At 23, MNEK now has one billion streams to his name, between his early material and wider collaborations. “Never Forget You,” his duet with Zara Larsson, toppedBillboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart and has been certified 3x Platinum in the U.S. The list of artists MNEK has written and produced for includes Beyoncé, Dua Lipa, Little Mix, Madonna, Diplo, MØ, Rudimental, Julia Michaels and Stormzy, to name but a few.
